Mechanically Tuning Classic Cars

Mechanically tuning a car, often referred to as "performance tuning" or "engine tuning," involves making modifications and adjustments to various mechanical components of the vehicle to improve its performance, handling, and overall driving experience. Mechanical tuning is a skill that is unfortunately being lost as the years go by. Cars produced nowadays are tuned utilising mapping software, but back before cars had internal computer systems, they were tuned by hand, mechanically.

The goal is to enhance the car's power, speed, responsiveness, and sometimes fuel efficiency. While tuning can significantly boost a car's performance, it's essential to approach it with caution and be aware of the legal and safety implications in your region.

Here are some common aspects involved in mechanically tuning a car.

Firstly, where we can, we make sure the car gets on the Dyno to see how it’s performing as is. This means after we’ve done our tune, we can pop it back on a see how it’s improved. The ignition timing has to be mechanically set to ensure the longevity of the car's engine. This also reduces excessive vibrations and potential engine damage in the long term.

The carburetor has to be dialed in to ensures that your engine is receiving the right mix of fuel and air. This will reduce the risk of your car running to rich or lean. The manifold vacuum will be checked to ensure it is within spec, along with the transmission being dialed to ensure the power generated by the engine is being delivered to the wheels.

It's essential to remember that mechanically tuning a car can have significant effects on its safety, reliability, and warranty. If not done properly, it can cause damage to the vehicle or even lead to accidents. Therefore, tuning should be approached with careful research, by an experienced mechanical tuner.

These are just some of the things your mechanic should be reviewing when it comes to mechanically tuning your car. Do you have a classic car that needs a tune? Be sure to get in contact with us at Thoroughbred to book your appointment.
